Often our MLL/ELL students have mastered basic interpersonal communication skills (i.e. day-to-day social language), but are still developing their cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP). In this session, participants will learn about the three tiers of academic language and strategies to support language learners’ academic vocabulary development within the context of content area instruction. Secondary educators will also receive an overview of multiple tools that will help anticipate the academic language needs of their MLLs/ELLs when lesson planning and will also explore research-based strategies that can be used to target academic language and vocabulary skills, while still maintaining instructional rigor for MLL/ELL students.
