Avoiding Equity Detours, Embracing Equity Literacy

In this highly interactive workshop participants will strengthen their abilities to recognize and respond effectively to bias and inequities in their spheres of influence. We will work on developing a deep and layered understanding of how inequity and equity operate in schools and the dangers of adopting simplistic approaches–or “equity detours”–to inequity. We also will explore a set of basic equity principles that can guide effective, evidence-based equity efforts classrooms and schools.

By attending this session, attendees will leave with…

  • A deeper understanding of equity and inequity and how they operate in schools
  • A research-based set of equity principles that guide effective equity progress in schools
  • Stronger abilities to identify even subtle bias and inequity
