Differentiated Assessment for Secondary Newcomers: Progress Monitoring & Giving Feedback in Writing

April 4 @ 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Middle and high school Entering and Emerging newcomer MLLs/ELLs face a big challenge in demonstrating their learning in their new language. In this session, participants will analyze a writing rubric developed specifically for secondary Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) and Newcomers. This rubric was designed by Bridges in partnership with the Center for Applied Learning (CAL) to help teachers monitor writing in English at the word, sentence, paragraph and essay level, while also recognizing ideas in home language and using this information to plan instruction. In this interactive workshop, participants will analyze student work and discuss ways to give feedback to students individually and in small groups. Participants will walk away with resources for possible activities to support newcomers’ writing and language development in the secondary content areas.
