Don’t Return to Normal: Why Anti-Racist Educators Must TRANSFORM Teaching (Part 2)

December 8 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

“There’s been so much learning loss, which is why we need to get back to normal.” We’ve heard this trope countless times in the last year-and-a-half since the pandemic began but what does it mean to return to “normal?” What did “normal” look and feel like for the most marginalized and disenfranchised students in the US before COVID-19? The carceral logics that intersect with schooling (Benjamin, 2021; Laura, 2019) are one norm we should continue seeking to abolish (among many). The Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Education reported, “pre-pandemic disparities in resources, opportunities, and outcomes experienced by many students of color set the foundation for additional race-based disparities in educational opportunities as a result of COVID-19” (p. 6). ). In light of this, how should anti-racist educators approach the return-to-normal narrative? In this two-part workshop series*, participants will consider what it means to problematize this narrative by considering the implications of “returning to normal” for the academic and behavioral outcomes for students of color and students with disabilities.

In Part Two, we will identify and interrogate specific aspects of workshop participants’ curricula, pedagogy, and behavioral support systems for the purpose of (a) rooting out the vestiges of normalcy that are policing students and (b) reimagining said learning and social experiences through a liberatory lens. In the words of Love (2019), “We must struggle together not only to reimagine schools but to build new schools that we are taught to believe are impossible: schools based on intersectional justice, antiracism, love, healing, and joy” (p. 11). We can do this; we are called to do this. Participants should expect to complete preparatory work ahead of this workshop session.
