Enhancing Secondary MLL/ELL Students’ Experience of Literary Works Through the Arts

March 27 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Each Monday in March, the Collaborative is featuring different MLL/ELL educators to share current classroom practices that yield results for their students. In this SEAT-FREE session with current practitioners Karen Jackson and Lindsay Hockaday, attendees will discuss arts integration methods for breaking down literary texts in middle and high school coursework. Arts integration offers a creative way to gain more meaningful comprehension of work typically deemed too difficult for students learning English. The interactive teaching strategies in this workshop can be used to engage diverse learners as they navigate dense, high-level texts without simplifying or “dumbing down” material.

By attending this session, attendees will leave with…

  • Visual and performing arts integration strategies that can be used to foster comprehension of literary texts and academic output for MLL students. Attendees will learn arts-integration methods for use in middle and high school content classes.
