Identifying the Root Causes of Disproportionality

January 22, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

- $375.00

The disproportionate overrepresentation of racially, culturally and linguistically diverse students in discipline and special education, coupled with their underrepresentation in advanced courses and gifted and talented education, prompts us to look at complex notions of data to understand why these trends occur. As important as the findings of numerical data, is the narrative behind that data and more importantly, how that data is tied to the deep historical entanglements of race and racialized stereotypes in society. This workshop will explore these ties, or root causes, which, once identified, can guide educators in addressing the roots of unconscious bias and structural inequities that set up barriers for specific students and result in harmful racial climates in the classroom and beyond.
