Each school year, there are a subset of students who do not, or “just barely,” move on to the next grade. As educators, we know retaining a student (or not) can change the trajectory of a student’s life for better or for worse. Whether or not retention or promotion was the “right” decision, all students must be supported and have access to their education.
At this SEAT-FREE Lunch & Learn, Ali Apfel will discuss how to make sure students that have historically been below grade level, and were perhaps retained or candidates for retention in previous years, are supported from day one. Ali will share evidence-based practices and school wide structures to support teachers, students, and families, so instruction is relevant and student achievement is targeted for emerging learners that may be significantly behind grade level achievement metrics. Participants will have time to ask questions and share best practices to ensure everyone can walk away with the advice they need to support students and families during yet another year of teaching and learning that will look different than any year we’ve experienced.
