All charter schools are mandated to administer the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) annually to their MLL/ELL students. In this training, participants will learn the ins and outs of administering the writing subtest of the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT). Participants will have the opportunity to norm on scoring the 9th-12th Grade Writing portions of the NYSESLAT using the state-published rubric.
By attending this session, attendees will leave with…
– An understanding of the legal mandates and logistics associated with administering the NYSESLAT
– An understanding of the NYSESLAT 9th-12th Grade Writing rubric and how to use it to score student responses on the NYSESLAT
– The beginnings of a network of fellow MLL/ELL educators across NYC charter schools *Note that ENL/ESL and ELA teachers are not eligible to score their own students and each school will need a committee of at least three Writing scorers (one for each piece a student produces).
Presenters: Melissa Katz & Jennifer Hall
**Attendees will only use ONE (1) ELL Compliance & Assessment (ECA) seat, even if they are attending multiple NYSESLAT administration and scoring sessions (for example, someone attending both 9-12 Grade Writing and K-12 Speaking would use only one ECA seat). ECA seat allotment is based on schools’ membership with The Collaborative for Inclusive Education:
Select/Core – 1 seat/semester
Enhanced – 2 seats/semester
Premier – 3 seats/semester
