Many of our go-to math scaffolds aim to make the abstract more concrete. From manipulatives to visual representations, math educators understand the value of these scaffolds. However, when and how do we begin to take these scaffolds away? In this three-part series* with math expert Dr. Nicki Newton, we’ll explore effective math scaffolds, how to introduce them, AND how to begin to phase them out.
In this first session, Dr. Nicki will help participants discover the power of visualization in math. The research says that students who can visualize the mathematics are 6 times more likely to be able to solve a problem (Boonen et al. 2014). We will explore the power of visualization across the grades, focusing on math graphic organizers, diagrams and number lines, with immediately applicable strategies.
Presenter: Dr. Nicki Newton
