Join us for a full day of learning with MLL/ELL expert Daria Witt! The morning will be focused on learning the fine art of scaffolding writing assignments, in which supports grant multilingual learners access to the task without compromising the rigor at its heart. Participants will also have the opportunity to apply key strategies around on modelling writing assignments and the use of paragraph frames that provide crucial structure to student writing.
In the afternoon we will explore what meaningful differentiation looks like in a classroom that is wide ranging in terms of English and academic proficiency. This session will address ways to avoid “over-scaffolding” and over simplifying content while supporting all students in engaging in complex thinking and rigorous content. Participants will apply key concepts and strategies that lay the groundwork for effective differentiation in all content areas. Participants will have the chance to explore concrete models for how students at multiple levels can be supported in achieving the same objectives (with different levels of support to get to those objectives and different ways to communicate their achievement of those objectives). We will break down the thinking behind those models and strategies used so that participants will be able to apply each one to a variety of classroom tasks (including tasks from their own curriculum).
