In order for students to understand the language used in complex text, it is essential for them to analyze and practice using academic language in a meaningful way. Language Dives are one way for students to do this, and are particularly beneficial for English learners and language minority students. Based on research by Lily Wong Fillmore, Language Dives invite teachers and students to “slow down for 10-20 minutes to have a conversation about the meaning, purpose, and structure of a compelling sentence from a complex text…” (EL Education, 2017).
In this webinar, participants will learn how to craft Language Dives to support English Language Development – starting with how to select a Language Dive sentence, and ending with suggestions for implementation of Language Dives in the classroom.
