All primary students, regardless of the languages they speak at home, are learning foundational literacy skills. This workshop ensures that those skills are comprehensible to ALL learners. Discover how to effectively teach the five components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) to multilingual learners. This session demonstrates best practices for teaching foundational reading skills and provides strategies you can use immediately.
By attending this session, participants will leave with:
- practical strategies for building phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency through a read aloud
- a theoretical understanding of what’s different about teaching foundational reading skills to MLLs/ELLs
Presenter: Beth Skelton
Note: The session is designed for primary teachers (Kindergarten – Grade 3).
