New York City has a rich immigrant history and we are living through another historic moment with the recent influx of asylum seekers. While there are many things individual teachers can do to support newcomer multilingual learners in their class, this population also requires more holistic support. This semester, we are partnering with Confianza for a five-part series* to support school teams in creating comprehensive plans to meet the needs of their newcomers.
School teams should consist of a school leader, an MLL/ELL lead, and a core content teacher. Over the course of this series, school teams will:
- Learn how to center multilingual learners in Tier 1/universal classroom spaces so that not just MLL students’ needs are met but differentiation is occurring for ALL students
- Examine belief systems and practices for serving Newcomers/culturally and linguistically diverse students
- Explore research-based strategies for leaders of multilingual learner Newcomer students around policy, programming, instruction, family engagement, and multi-tiered systems of support (topics will be determined based on participant feedback)
- Reflect on current leadership and/or instructional practices using structured frameworks to identify areas of strengths and opportunities for growth
- Create a team Action Cycle for your team to implement as a result of being part of this cohort
