How Can Special Education Leads Empower Families to Effective Child Advocacy?

February 12 @ 9:00 am - 10:15 am

Are you a special education leader wondering how to best partner with families on behalf of students with disabilities? Then this session is for you! Hear from Special Education Attorney Magda Labonté-Blaise on ways that Special Education leads can work with families throughout the IEP process to ensure maximum outcomes for students. A former special education teacher and leader herself, Magda will provide practical tools and strategies to help families effectively advocate for appropriate services and supports for their child with disabilities.

Key takeaways for this session include:

  • Ways to help families to establish good rapport with school personnel as well as ensuring that appropriate documentation is collected.
  • Ideas for working with families when resolving misaligned IEPs.
  • Identification of services and programs that the parent can request when a child has an IEP and even when they do not. Additionally, helping parents to ensure that interventions are being implemented and appropriately assessed.

Facilitator: Magda Labonté-Blaise
